About Us

Main Street Birmingham’s job description is simple: Growing Business, Revitalizing Neighborhoods and Empowering Communities.

The job, however, is anything but simple.

Main Street Birmingham, Inc., was founded in 2004 as a partnership with the City of Birmingham “to improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents by the revitalization of their commercial cores.” We have done our best in those years to use available resources to foster development in neighborhood commercial centers like Avondale, East Lake, Ensley, West End, Woodlawn and others.  The overall results are noteworthy: more than $30 million dollars in investment and 300 jobs created by projects fostered by Main Street Birmingham.

Growing Business

  • Providing one-to-one coaching and technical assistance for entrepreneurs
  • Offering informational seminars and workshops
  • Collecting information on available properties, development opportunities and market data
  • Linking businesses to funding and government incentives
  • Linking entrepreneurs and businesses to city processes and services

Revitalizing Neighborhoods

  • Fostering catalytic developments that demonstrate an area’s potential and attract future investment.
  • Developing focus groups and market surveys to help others find opportunities.
  • Seeking out corporate and community partners that bring passion, expertise and funding.

Empowering Communities

  • Empowering local businesses to work together to improve their environments through merchants associations
  • Collaborating with and providing staff support for merchants associations and small non-profits focused on community improvement
  • Assisting with marketing programs and events
  • Providing a link to federal, state, county and city services

Main Street Birmingham, Inc. (MSB) is a nonprofit organization under contract to the City of Birmingham to implement the BEACON program for neighborhood commercial district revitalization. Main Street Birmingham is proud to partner with the City of Birmingham Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and Department of Community Development.
